LA vs. NY: Always an Epic Showdown By Andy Bensch
Can someone remind me of the last time we saw a LA-NY professional championship game or series? When it comes to the four most popular team sports in North America, when would the last time have been?
Let's start with the NFL. Currently there is no LA based squad. And I'm pretty certain neither the Rams nor Raiders linked up with the Jets or Giants at the Super Bowl while they called LA home.
So we've never seen it in football.
How bout baseball? Dodgers-Yankees or Angels-Mets? It has been 30 years since the Dodgers last faced off against the Yankees in an October classic. It was 1981 when the Dodgers beat the Yankees in six games.
What about basketball? The Lakers and the Celtics have gone head-to-head time and time again but LA-Boston lacks a certain "jena se qua" as LA-New York.
The last time the New York Knicks won the NBA Title was also the last time they have met up with either the Lakers or Clippers in the NBA Final. The year was 1973 and the Knicks defeated the Lakers in five games.
Now as I type, the Los Angeles Kings hold a 3-1 series lead over the Phoenix Coyotes in the NHL Western Conference final. Meanwhile the New York Rangers are tied 2-2 with the New Jersey Devils in the NHL Eastern Conference final.
